Understanding Your Medicare Enrollment Periods

Navigating Medicare enrollment can be confusing, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Here’s a quick guide to help you know when you can sign up:

1. Turning 65?

Most people are first eligible for Medicare when they turn 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window:

  • Starts: 3 months before your 65th birthday month
  • Includes: Your birthday month
  • Ends: 3 months after your birthday month

2. Still Working or Have Employer Coverage?

If you’re still working and have health coverage through your employer (or your spouse’s), you may be able to delay Medicare without penalty. When you retire or lose that coverage, you’ll get a Special Enrollment Period to sign up.

3. Missed Your Initial Window?

If you didn’t sign up when first eligible, you can enroll during the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31 each year), but you may face late penalty fees.

4. Special Enrollment Periods

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if:

  • You move out of your plan’s service area
  • You lose other health coverage
  • You qualify for Extra Help or Medicaid

5. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Every year from October 15 – December 7, you can review and change your Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan for the next year.
