Medicare Supplement Plan F
Medicare Supplement Insurance plans—also known as Medigap—work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help cover out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. Medicare Supplement Plan F (Medigap Plan F) is the most comprehensive standardized Medigap plan available in most states (Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have their own versions).
Important: Plan F is only available to beneficiaries who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
What Does Medicare Supplement Plan F Cover?
Plan F covers 100% of all Medicare Part A and Part B coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles for those eligible. Here’s what’s included:
Plan F covers:
Hospital Expenses: 100% of Part A hospital costs, including all coinsurance and deductible expenses.
Medical Expenses: 100% of Original Medicare Part B coinsurance (typically 20% of Medicare-approved expenses).
Blood Transfusions: The first three pints of blood needed for a medical procedure.
Hospice Care: Original Medicare Part A coinsurance or copayment.
Skilled Nursing Facility Care: Coinsurance for skilled nursing facility care.
Part B Deductible: 100% of the Medicare Part B deductible ($283 in 2026).
Excess Charges: Original Medicare Part B excess charges.
Foreign Travel Medical Emergencies: 80% of approved costs (up to plan limits) for medical emergencies while traveling abroad.
Preventive Care: Original Medicare preventive costs.
Not covered by Plan F:
Prescription Drugs: Plan F does not cover prescription drugs. You can purchase a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) for medication coverage.
Who Can Enroll in Medicare Supplement Plan F?
If you became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020: You may still purchase or keep Plan F.
If you became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020: Plan F is not available, but you may consider Plan G or Plan N for similar coverage.
Already Have Plan F?
If you’re already enrolled in Plan F, you can keep your coverage as long as you continue to pay your premiums. You may also compare your options and switch plans if you wish.
Alternative Medicare Supplement Plans
If you’re not eligible for Plan F, Medicare Supplement Plan G offers nearly identical coverage, except it does not cover the Medicare Part B deductible. Plan G also has a high-deductible option.
How Much Does Medicare Supplement Plan F Cost?
Monthly premiums for Plan F are set by private insurance companies and depend on factors like your location, age, gender, health status, and more. Premiums can vary between companies for the same coverage.
How Pricing Works
Medigap policies can be priced in three ways:
Community-Rated: Same premium for everyone, regardless of age.
Issue-Age-Rated: Premium is based on your age when you buy the policy and won’t increase as you age.
Attained-Age-Rated: Premium is based on your current age and increases as you get older.
When to Enroll in Medicare Supplement Plans
When You’re First Eligible: The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the first month you’re 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this six-month window, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in your state, regardless of health status, and you’ll generally get the best prices and choices.
After Open Enrollment: You can still apply for Medigap coverage, but acceptance and pricing may depend on medical underwriting.
