Financial Strength

Understanding Ratings

Forrest T. Jones & Company (FTJ) represents some of the largest and highest rated life and health insurance companies in the nation, as well as many smaller, well-regarded insurers with expertise in specialty coverages.

These companies — also referred to as "insurance carriers" or "underwriters" — design the insurance plans FTJ sells, and they guarantee the benefit contained in those plans.

In assessing the strength and viability of an insurance company — that is, its ability to pay policy benefits when a claim is filed — its financial ratings are valuable indicators. These ratings assess the risks that could affect the long-term survival of the company.

There are several companies that provide ratings for insurers: A.M. Best & Company, Standard & Poor's, Moody's Investor Service, Fitch Ratings, and Weiss. Each service uses different letter grades for their ratings, but in general, all rate companies with a series of ratings from A through D; carriers receiving one of the A ratings are the most financially sound.

Current ratings for the insurance companies FTJ works with are shown on the left. All insurers are not rated by all rating services. For information on how each rating service derives its ratings can be found on their respective web sites:

FTJ's relationship with its carriers varies. For some, it serves solely as the sales agent. For many others, FTJ provides an array of third-party administration services. These include: underwriting services (risk assessment and rating for applicants), policy issuance, billing, customer service, and claims adjudication and payment.
